Everything you need to know before visiting Versailles

The Palace of Versailles, a symbol of French royalty and grandeur, is located just outside Paris. Known for its opulent architecture, luxurious interiors, and beautiful gardens covering over 800 hectares, it began as a small hunting lodge. King Louis XIV transformed it into a symbol of absolute monarchy and French luxury during his reign. Today, Versailles is a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting millions of visitors who come to experience its rich history and architectural beauty.

About Versailles

The history of Versailles began in the early 1600s as a small hunting lodge built by King Louis XIII. His son, King Louis XIV, expanded it into a vast palace to display France’s power and wealth. It became the center of government and the royal family’s residence. The Palace is renowned for its impressive architectural design, lavishly decorated interiors, royal chambers, and vast, symmetrical gardens. Among its highlights is the Hall of Mirrors, the palace’s most iconic room, which served as a grand reception hall and symbol of royal splendor.

After the French Revolution in 1789, the royal family left, and Versailles lost its political significance. The Palace was converted into a museum of the history of France in 1837, under King Louis-Philippe. Today, it attracts nearly 10 million visitors every year, making it one of the most famous historic sites in the world and a lasting symbol of France.

Best time to visit Versailles

Versailles is one of France’s most visited landmarks, with tourists visiting all year round. The ideal time to visit depends on your personal preferences. We recommend that you buy tickets in advance and choose the season that suits you the best. For a balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds, early spring (April-May) or late autumn (September-October) are ideal. To avoid crowds, arrive just before the Palace opens, especially during the busy season, or visit a few hours before closing. Weekdays are typically quieter than weekends. Keep in mind that the Palace is closed on Mondays.
